Warning: Are You Prepared for This Year’s Flu Season?

I want to do a post about Japanese honeysuckle because it is a very common cooling herb for the common cold and is used in different kinds of herbal teas and it is even commercially available as a herbal tea by itself.

Botanical name: Lonicera japonica

Other names: Suikazura  in Japanese; Jinyinhua in Chinese; Hall’s Prolific; ren dong teng, jin yin hua

Parts Used/How is it collected and processed: Blossoms and buds are collected in early summer, used sun dried, fresh, toasted or manufactured into medicine. Leaves and stems are collected in the fall, used fresh or dried.

Function: (often used with Forsythia ) to dispel heat and remove toxins, including carbuncles, fevers, influenza and ulcers. Most commonly used for fever, headache, cough, thirst, and sore throat.

Properties: Sweet/Cold, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-toxin, anti-pyretic

Quantity/How it’s prepared: Steep 10 – 15g in boiling water.

What is meant by cold herb?

It’s often referred to as a cold herb meaning that it is used in what is called excess heat conditions such as fevers, skin rashes, and sore throat. Excess heat conditions are essentially inflammatory processes involving heat, redness, pain, and swelling often due to external pathogenic factors such as bacteria and viruses. Therefore, the cold nature of jin yin hua is considered to cool the heat nature of the heat related conditions.
